He was born on February 28, 1927 in Baku.

Valentin Khlistov played 180 games and scored 3 goals for Neftchi in 1946-1955.

The defender, who had to end his football career at the age of 28 due to injury, worked as a coach at Neftchi in 1958, 1963-1970, and as a head coach in 1973-1975. He was the coach of "Neftchi", which won the bronze medal of the USSR championship in 1966.

Khlystov worked for a long time at the Neftchi Olympic Reserve Children and Youth School and was its director. Under his leadership, players such as Arif Asadov and Vladislav Gadirov were trained.

Valentin Khlistov died on March 8, 2007 in Moscow.
