Alakbar Mammadov, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, Honored Coach, Presidential Fellow, Laureate of the Order of Glory, was born on May 9, 1930 in Baku.

 He played 166 games and scored 56 goals for Neftchi in the USSR 1947-1953 and 1960-1961. Mammadov, who also played for Moscow's Dinamo (1953-1959), was a champion in the high league in 1954, 1955, 1957 and 1959. He was twice named in the list of 33 best players twice. He was also invited to the USSR national team. He played in the qualifying round of the European Championship in 1960.

After finishing his career, the player started coaching and led Neftchi in 1963-1965 and 1971-1972. In 1993, he continued his work as the head coach of the national team.
